DC Area Commute Second Longest in the Nation!
The federal Census Bureau released a study this week that named the DC area and Northern Virginia the second longest commute time in the United States. Average travel time to work in the northern Virginia DC area was 34.5 minutes in 2011. The commute time average was just behind New York City with a 34.9 minute commute. Because the District of Columbia has so many job opportunities the surrounding areas in Northern Virginia and southern Maryland benefit greatly from residential development, and road infrastructure. The population growth in these areas has increased over the past decade at a pace too fast for road construction to keep up. New projects to minimize the daily commute time are expected this year.
